To most families, selecting a home care agency is a daunting task. The following guidelines will help you navigate this task with some ease.
1) HAVE A DISCUSSION WITH YOUR FAMILY AND PHYSICIAN.
Our families play a very vital role in our care. Having them come and discuss your care is very important. Also have a discussion with your physician.
2) ASSESS YOUR HOME CARE NEEDS.
What is it that you need? Do you need help with laundry, light housekeeping, light meal preparation, personal care services (bathing and toileting), showers, companion care and much more. Discuss this list with your family and physician.
3) KNOW YOU BUDGET.
How much do you want to spend? Most agencies will charge per hour and will have a minimum number of hours per day. You need to be able to know what the agency requires to make an informed decision. I will suggest you make lots of savings early on in your care and increase as your budget as needed. Always discuss with your family.
4) FIND A HOME CARE AGENCY.
Make a list of five home care agencies and do some basic research. I will suggest you make a list of their services and a list of your needs as out lined above. Sit with your family and discuss what works best for you.
5) INTERVIW THE HOME CARE AGENCIES
Call the agencies and have a discussion with them. Understand their values and how well they will be able to serve you. People connect with people. Work with an agency you feel connected to. You need to be comfortable to discuss with its management when you feel stressed. They need to be there for you when you need them. Again, always discuss with family your results and findings
